Kramer Nightswan Project

OK, Many of you know that I purchased the ugly “Nightswan” with the horrible Frankenstein homemade paint job from ebay. Well, me being me, I also bought a horribly ugly “modified” Nightswan as well. It really isn’t too bad looking, someone along the way added a single coil in the neck position, but they also added a Fender style input on the top of the body (why?????).

ANYWAY, my point being is this. I’m struggling with what exactly to do. I currently have two options. My first option is to sell off all of the parts. Doing this would net me an estimated profit of $200-300 over my purchase prices. I could then turn around and buy myself a Nightswan off of ebay, and have $900-1000 to spend (or have money left over).

OR, I could go with what was my original plan (before I started doubting myself). My original plan involved keeping the “good” Nightswan body (from the Frankenstein guitar), and getting it refinished professionally. Since I would have the neck from the other guitar, and I believe I would have all of the other stock parts, I don’t think I’d have any other investment than the refinish and assembly/setup. After I sell off the spare parts I’m estimating I’d have about $300 at most into the Swan (before refinishing).

What would you guys do? Does anyone have any idea how much it would cost to get the Swan refinished, and who would do a great job?

I’m interested in your thoughts because I’ve been changing my mind every other day on this one….

Kramer Nightswan Parts

The Kramer Nightswan Guitar was a signature model for Vivian Campbell. The Nightswan actually has an interesting background that most people haven’t heard about, that really makes this instrument far from being a Kramer designed instrument. The Nightswan actually started as the “Shredder” model from Buddy Blaze guitars. During the period of 1987–1988, Campbell had Dallas-area luthier Buddy Blaze make him a custom guitar. This instrument, nicknamed the Shredder, had a Strat-shaped mahogany body with polka-dot graphics, a 24-fret neck with diagonal dot inlays on its ebony fretboard, a pointy reverse headstock, and two Seymour Duncan humbucker pickups. The bridge was a Floyd Rose. A deal was then set up between Buddy Blaze and Kramer Guitars. Kramer eventually hired Buddy as a business associate, not just as an employee, and Buddy Blaze managed the association with Vivian and other artists while working for Kramer. The Shredder was eventually renamed to the Nightswan, by Vivian’s wife. Needless to say, the Nightswan is one of the most remarkable instruments Kramer ever made. Vivian signed with Kramer as an endorser, and there are a few ads showing him with this guitar. He played the original Shredder through Whitesnake’s 1987-1988 world tour.
